Be prepared when encountering ICE

Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) has made headlines in the past few months for their aggressive enforcement of immigration law. This has, understandably, made immigrants from all over the country extremely nervous.

If you are worried about being targeted by ICE for questioning, here are a few things you can do to prepare:

  • Practice what you would tell an ICE agent. Stick to facts and try to remain calm.
  • It is your right to stay silent. If you choose this right, calmly tell the agent of your choice.
  • Always ask if you are free to leave. Agents must provide a reason if you are under arrest.
  • You do not need to allow a search. Agents may ask to search you but know that you can refuse.
  • Keep important documents readily available in case you need them.
  • Have a trusted family member or friend’s number memorized in case you need to call.

These are just a few steps you can take to prepare for any encounters with Immigration Customs and Enforcement. Remember that while these agents have been aggressive in prosecuting illegal immigration, everyone still has rights in America no matter their citizen status.

It’s important to never make a situation worse with agents, and to try to remain calm. By following the tips above, you can stay prepared should you ever be approached by ICE. Do not attempt to mislead or lie to ICE agents, as this can make any situation worse.

If you or someone you know is facing immigration issues or have been targeted by ICE, an immigration attorney can help.
